Bamboo or plastic bamboo plates: the honest comparison for Brazil

Where bamboo genuinely wins, where it loses, and how to make the substitution claim without tripping greenwashing rules in Brazil.

Where bamboo genuinely wins, where it loses, and how to make the substitution claim without tripping greenwashing rules in Brazil.

The substitution case that holds up

A reusable bamboo article replaces a disposable plastic one at the point of use, and it does so without a petrochemical feedstock. That is a defensible claim. What is not defensible is a generic 'eco-friendly' or 'zero carbon' badge: several markets now treat unqualified environmental claims as misleading, and Brazil is no exception.

Brazil: Duties and II/IPI/PIS/COFINS are calculated on the NCM code, so a wrong classification costs more than a wrong price. Confirm the current rate with your despachante before you commit to a retail price.

Cost per use, not cost per unit

A bamboo plate costs more than a disposable plastic plate and less than most ceramics. The comparison only makes sense per use: divide by the number of service cycles the article survives under your washing regime, then compare. Ask for the wash-cycle guidance in writing, because the number your buyer assumes is usually higher than the number the material delivers.

Where bamboo loses

Prolonged soaking, commercial dishwashing at high temperature, and repeated exposure to strong detergents all shorten the life of an oiled bamboo article. It is also not suitable for raw meat contact unless the board is dedicated to it. A supplier who claims otherwise is selling you a return rate.

Making the claim without greenwashing

State what the article replaces, how many times it can be reused under stated conditions, and what it is made of. Avoid absolute terms. If you publish a plastic-avoided figure, tie it to a stated assumption — pieces per year, uses per piece — so the number can be checked. That is the difference between a claim that survives a regulator and one that becomes a liability.

Frequently asked

Is bamboo tableware biodegradable?

Bamboo itself is a natural material, but an oiled, laminated article behaves differently from raw bamboo. Do not claim industrial compostability unless you hold a certificate for the finished article.

How many times can bamboo plates be reused?

It depends on the washing regime. We state the recommended care conditions in writing and quote the reuse expectation for those conditions only.

Does bamboo contain formaldehyde?

Pressed bamboo ware uses heat and pressure; some laminated boards use adhesives. We state the binder used in the material declaration so your buyer can check it against their own restricted-substance list.

Can we claim plastic-free packaging?

Yes, when it is true. Our default packing is kraft and paper; if you add a printed box with a plastic window, that claim no longer holds.
