Moso strips are glued under heat, turned to wall thickness, then sanded and finished with a food-safe oil. Wall thickness is what separates a bowl that survives a commercial dishwasher cycle from one that delaminates in a domestic one, and it is the first thing to measure on a sample.

For Germany the same article is sold mainly into table service and buffet presentation, and German buyers tend to buy on specification and documentation rather than on price alone; a complete compliance file shortens the listing process with retailers like a discounter or a specialist kitchen retailer by weeks.

How Germany classifies bamboo bowls

Bamboo tableware and kitchenware normally enter under HS 4419 19 00 (wooden tableware and kitchenware). Duty lands in the low single digits — the current EU tariff on 4419 19 00 is 2.7%, and some bamboo kitchen items fall under 4419 90 00 at the same rate, and 19% VAT is charged on the customs value plus duty. EU entry is filed through ATLAS by a German customs agent; you need an EORI number before the first shipment, and the import VAT is reported through your Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung rather than paid in cash at the border when you hold a valid USt-ID.

Where the cost surprises come from: the customs value is not the FOB price. Freight and insurance to the border are added before duty is calculated, so a freight rate that moves by 20% moves your duty base as well.

The compliance gate

Food-contact articles must satisfy EU Regulation 1935/2004, the framework GMP Regulation 2023/2006 and the German LFGB (Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgegenstände- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch). Bamboo is a natural material, so there is no plastic positive list to lean on — the file you need is a declaration of compliance naming the surface treatment, the oil or wax used, and migration test results for the finished article. Since 13 December 2024 the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) also applies: the consumer-facing product must name an EU-based responsible person with a postal address, and the listing must carry the batch identification.

The documents that clear the border

This is the set a German broker will ask for on a first entry. Missing one does not stop the goods forever; it stops them long enough to generate storage charges, which is the same thing for your margin.

Commercial invoice with HS code, material and unit price per line

Packing list with carton dimensions and gross/net weight

Bill of lading or sea waybill

EORI number of the German importer

Declaration of compliance (EU 1935/2004) plus migration test report

GPSR responsible-person statement

LUCID / VerpackG registration number for the packaging you place on the market

Landed cost, worked through

Take an illustrative order of 3,000 pieces at USD 2.40 FOB, a freight and insurance cost of USD 1,150, and a duty rate of 2.7%. The customs value becomes USD 8,350, duty is USD 225, and 19% is charged on USD 8,575. Add the broker fee, terminal handling and inland delivery, and the landed cost per piece is roughly USD 3.05 before 19% recovery. That is the number to compare against a domestic wholesale price — not the FOB figure on the proforma.

Because 19% is recoverable for a registered importer, it belongs in your cash-flow plan rather than your margin. The duty, the freight and the handling do not come back.

Shipping and transit

The main gateways are Hamburg and Bremerhaven, with 32–38 days port to port, plus 3–5 days to inland depots. Bamboo is light for its volume, so these shipments cube out before they weigh out: the carton dimension is the number that sets your freight per unit, and a 2 cm difference in carton height across 3,000 pieces is a real cost, not a rounding error.

Labelling and packaging obligations

Retail packaging needs German-language material and care information, the responsible person, a batch code and the packaging material marking. Registration in the LUCID packaging register (VerpackG) is the importer's obligation, not the supplier's, and it is checked before the first pallet reaches a German retailer.

Quality checks before the deposit leaves

For bamboo bowls the inspection points that actually predict returns are wall thickness at four points, rim concentricity, absence of glue-line gaps at the rim, and moisture content below 12% at packing. Ask for these to be measured on the production sample and recorded in the pre-shipment report, not described in an email.

Care instruction you can print with confidence: Hand washing extends the finish; if the buyer intends dishwasher use, specify it at quotation stage so the adhesive and the finish are chosen for it.

Bamboo bowl at a glance

MOQ

500 pcs

Sample lead

7–10 days

Bulk lead

25-30 days

HS working reference

4419 19 00 (wooden tableware and kitchenware)

Duty

in the low single digits — the current EU tariff on 4419 19 00 is 2.7%, and some bamboo kitchen items fall under 4419 90 00 at the same rate

Import VAT / tax

19%

Main ports

Hamburg and Bremerhaven

Transit

32–38 days port to port, plus 3–5 days to inland depots

Payment

SEPA transfer against a 30% deposit and 70% against the bill of lading copy is the norm; confirmed irrevocable L/C is used for first orders above EUR 50,000

Quotation basis

USD, FOB quoted; CIF and DAP on request

Frequently asked

<details>

What is the duty on bamboo bowls imported into Germany?

Most lines classify under 4419 19 00 (wooden tableware and kitchenware), where duty is in the low single digits — the current EU tariff on 4419 19 00 is 2.7%, and some bamboo kitchen items fall under 4419 90 00 at the same rate.
