A working guide for buyers sourcing bamboo chopstickss from China into the United States — what the goods actually are, which documents stop a container, and what to verify before the deposit leaves your account.
What you are actually buying
Bamboo Chopsticks is a pressed or turned bamboo article, not a plastic part with a bamboo look. The material is Moso bamboo strips laminated under heat, then sanded and oiled. There is no melamine binder and no plastic coating, which is exactly why the dishwasher and soaking limits are different from what your buyers are used to. Ask for the material declaration and a finished-goods photo set before you compare prices, because two suppliers quoting the same size can be shipping two different constructions.
The documents that decide whether the container clears
For the United States, the entry needs Commercial invoice; Packing list; Bill of lading; ISF 10+2 filed at least 24 hours before loading; FDA prior notice for food-contact ware; HTS classification on the entry. Miss any one of them and the container sits at Los Angeles and Savannah accruing storage while your customs broker files an amendment. The two that catch new importers are the food-contact evidence and the origin document: the first is a supplier deliverable, the second is usually your forwarder's job, and neither shows up in a proforma invoice unless you ask.
Volume maths before you commit
Carton dimensions and 20GP loading are the numbers that decide your landed cost, not the FOB price. We publish them as pending factory confirmation because a guessed carton size is worse than a blank one — it silently changes your freight per unit by double digits. Ask for the measured carton, the pieces per carton and the confirmed 20GP count, then rebuild the cost sheet.
What to verify before the deposit
Three checks are worth the delay: a sample from the actual production line rather than a showroom piece, a photo of the carton marks and inner packing, and a written statement of which certificate numbers you will receive with the shipment. If a supplier cannot name the certificate numbers, the documents do not exist yet.
