Most bamboo-fibre tableware is bamboo powder in a melamine-formaldehyde matrix - a plastic in law as well as in chemistry. The EU enforcement record, what to ask a composite supplier, and how to position composite and solid lines honestly.
Both boards are laminated products with glue lines - the real comparison is two different adhesive systems, two moisture behaviours and two compliance files. A line-by-line buyer's comparison, with honest limits on the hygiene evidence.
Prop 65 is enforced mostly by private claimants, not inspectors. Where the exposure sits in bamboo ware, how the safe harbour works, and how to build a file before the notice arrives.
Bamboo is not one material but four constructions, each with a different adhesive load. Which formaldehyde regime applies, which test method governs, and what the purchase order must say.
A migration report is only as useful as the conditions it names. What to brief the laboratory with, why bamboo falls between the EU's harmonised regimes, and how to read a report critically.
Four constructions share the word bamboo and none share a compliance file. How composition, binder chemistry and finish decide the declaration you can sign, and the claims that should never reach print.
The finish is the least specified line in most bamboo purchase orders and the first thing customers notice. Oil, lacquer or unfinished — what each family does to your compliance file, wash-cycle economics and unit cost, and how to write the finish into an enforceable specification.
The US framework runs on accountability rather than approval — which makes the importer's documentation the compliance asset. What bamboo tableware files should contain, how the US approach differs from the EU declaration chain, and the construction decisions that make the file easy to stand behind.
Food safe is a legal conclusion about a specific article, not a certificate. The frameworks behind the phrase, the four fields that decide whether a test report covers your SKU, and the shipment file that survives an audit.
If your bamboo boards, bowls and cutlery are heading to Brazil, the food-contact file is the part of the shipment that decides the retail listing — not the freight. What the ANVISA framework expects, in the order a despachante will ask for it.
